Although mainly considered in the context of women's college athletics, Title IX is now being examined as a way to address gender issues in the sciences, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM).
Title IX Basics
Title IX of the Education Amendments of 1972 states that "no person in the United States shall, on the basis of sex, be excluded from participation in, be denied the benefits of, or be subject to discrimination under any educational programs or activity receiving federal financial assistance" (20 U.S.C. 38, Section 1681).
